Why I Use a 3D Mouse: Billy Hallman

Billy HallmanWhat’s all the fuss about 3D mice? We decided to ask real engineers, designers and 3D professionals how and why they use 3D mice in their design work.

Billy Hallman is a certified SolidWorks draftsman at Oliver Manufacturing Co. We asked Billy about why he uses a 3D mouse to get the job done in SolidWorks.

How did you first hear about 3Dconnexion 3D mice?

Two and a half years ago, I came to a point in my life where I had to make some changes, so I decided to go back to school and change occupations. Previously, I had been a union boilermaker, welder, fabricator and rigger.

When I walked into the local college, they had a showcase of their mechanical graphic design programs. The display showed off 3D printed objects and SolidWorks models. I instantly knew this was for me.

I went home and started researching what I would need to succeed as a SolidWorks designer. Through my search, I stumbled upon a blog about graphic design tools. That was the first time heard about 3D mice. I watched YouTube videos, read through many websites and articles, and got an education in the product.

What was it like adopting a 3D mouse?

Through 3Dconnexion’s educational discount program, I bought two 3Dconnexion 3D mice.

From the moment I laid my hands on them, I was amazed. They felt like they were meant to be part of the program. I was also able to customize the buttons to reach for the keyboard even less while designing.

What kind of 3Dconnexion 3D mouse do you use?

I bought both the SpacePilot Pro and the SpaceNavigator for Notebooks.

What software do you use with your 3D mouse?

I use SolidWorks, but also use AutoCAD LT, Adobe Reader, DraftSight and multiple viewers daily with my 3Dconnexion products.

How has using a 3D mouse affected your professional life?

I find that I am more productive than most of my co-workers. With a balanced, two-handed work-style, I can get tasks and designs done quickly and efficiently.

After passing the CSWA test on my first try (using the SpacePilot Pro), I decided to try it again, but this time without using the 3D mouse. It took 24 minutes longer to complete—even though I already knew the ins and outs of the exam.

What would you say to someone who has heard of 3D mice, but isn’t sure about purchasing one?

I have told lots of people about them—especially the SpacePilot Pro. When demonstrating its functionality, I either show them how it works on my workstation, or show them the device.

Most think the price is significant. I tell them that, just like everything in life, if there is a better way to get the job done and be more productive doing it, then you owe it to yourself and your company to do so.
